Father who had a stroke

Hi, and thank you for listening.

My Father is 88 years old, he is blind and 99% deaf, he has had a stroke several years ago and can barely get around.

We love him so much, his mind is mostly good, He feels so useless because he can’t do anything by himself, our hearts are breaking.

This man always worked, most days 15 hours, he has always been the doer, now for the last year he is unable to do anything.... Please someone tell us what we can do for him.

Something we can do with him....

Diane, the fact that his mind is still sharp while his body has taken so much away from him is actually the most important detail here because that gives you so much to work with. Since he is nearly deaf, tactile and physical connection matters more than ever, holding his hand while you sit with him, letting him feel objects from his past like tools or familiar items from the work he used to do, or even just having him run his hands over things that connect him to who he was as a man. You can also give him small ways to still feel like a contributor, asking for his opinion on decisions, letting him be the one to say grace before meals, or asking him to tell stories from his working years while someone writes them down because preserving those stories is something only he can do.

A life review project where family members take turns recording his memories, even through a simple voice recorder held close so he can hear the question, can give him enormous purpose and something tangible to leave behind. He may not be able to do what he once did but he is still the patriarch of your family and helping him feel that every single day is the most powerful thing you can give him right now.
